Why does my cursor stop when I press the control button?

For example, when highlighting numerous files, you press the control button to highlight the next file while moving the mouse (which moves the cursor). My problem is that when I press the control button, it stops the cursor moving (whilst moving the mouse by the way, I'm not stupid). Why is this happening and what can I do to stop it happening? Why does my cursor stop when I press the control button?
You're just a little off about the highlighting process. Try this way for better results--

If you want to select (hilite) contiguous items, click the 1st one, hold down the shift key %26amp; click the last one. This will select all the items between them.

If you want to select non-contiguous, click the 1st one, hold down the Ctrl key %26amp; click the next item. This will select only the 2 items, and you can repeat again to select a 3rd item %26amp; subsequent items.

Example: you have a list of 1 thru 20. You want to select 3 thru 10--click 3, press Shift key %26amp; click 10-- 3 thru 10 are all hilited

Example 2: same list, you want to select 3, 5, 9, and 15. click 3, hold down ctrl key while clicking 5 %26amp; 9 %26amp; 15
