Strangely enough I was having the same problem (But also my network icon had vanished too) The easiest way to get it back seems to be to log off and log back in againI have Windows Vista and my volume control button disappeared. How can I get it back?
Do you still hear the sound?...If you don't, then all possibility that you might have deleted your sound driver accidentally. You would have to re install that. Shouldn't be a big deal. Go to Microsoft's site and download the driver, install it, restart the machine, you should be able to see the volume icon

it could be in your recycle bin so if it there drag it back to the icon layout. or u could go to control panel and re-install it there.
